Meth labs (8.66 / 3)
...[Kathleen Madigan] who was just in SF last week... was talking about the phenomenon of meth labs that are springing up all over rural America. And how it's all these rednecks cooking up meth. She said something to the effect of how she wouldn't want to do any drug that "involved rednecks and science."

No kidding (8.00 / 1)

That gets filed under the "it's funny because it's true" category. My girlfriend's parents live out in rural Western Washington, a region decimated by the loss of timber jobs over the last 20 years. Meth labs are all over the place, not a month goes by without hearing about a house or, usually, a trailer having blown up or burned down due to meth lab activity.

Then there's the phenomenon of the magically disappearing guardrails and other metallic items of public infrastructure - methheads steal them and sell them for scrap metal (apparently the value of scrap metal is sky-high these days) to finance their habit or their production.
