Gallup has consistently given Bush some of his best numbers. So for him to break the 40 percent floor in that poll is not a great sign. In fact, it's a terrible sign.

Gallup. 10/13-16. MoE 3% (9/26-28 results)

Do you approve or disapprove of the way George W. Bush is handling his job as president?

Approve 39 (45)
Disapprove 58 (50)

Hess says that loss among independents "bodes ill" for Republicans in the 2006 elections.

However, Bush's approval among his Republican base continues to hold steady. It was 85% in the previous poll and 84% now. That steady GOP support is preventing him from falling lower. How long that GOP base holds remains a key question, Edmonds says.

Interesting, I would've guessed the drop came from disatisfied Republicans. If anything cracks that facade (and I'm thinking that's unlikely), Bush might start flirting with the 20s.
