Sony announces employee surplus

Howard Stringer, Sony’s first foreign chief executive, is hell-bent on reversing the company's fortunes in its core electronics business, even if it entails a broad, ritual blood-letting. This morning the consumer electronics giant announced a broad three-year restructuring plan that it says will ensure it a top spot in the market for digital electronics. To that end it plans to shutter 11 factories, downsize or scrap 15 unspecified business lines, and sack 10,000 employees - 6.5 percent of its global workforce.
