COLORADO SPRINGS IS READY FOR NORCOM

Crews Are Finishing Work On Buildings At Peterson Air Force Base For The New Northern Command

THE EYES OF THE NATION WILL BE ON PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE TUESDAY.

NORTHERN COMMAND, THE NEWLY CREATED REGIONAL COMMAND IN CHARGE OF HOMELAND DEFENSE, BEGINS OPERATIONS TUESDAY.

IT WILL BE A HISTORIC DAY FOR OUR MILITARY AND OUR NATION.

DETER, PREVENT AND DEFEAT THREATS AIMED AT THE UNITED STATES WILL BE NORCOM'S MISSION. THIS WILL BE THE FIRST TIME DEFENSE OF OUR HOMELAND HAS FALLEN UNDER ONE COMMAND SINCE GEORGE WASHINGTON.

NORCOM'S AREAS OF OPERATIONAL RESPONSIBILITY INCLUDE AIR, LAND, AND SEA OF THE UNITED STATES, CANADA, MEXICO, AND THE SURROUNDING WATER OUT 500 NAUTICAL MILES.

AIRFORCE GENERAL ED EBERHART WILL LEAD THE NEW COMMAND AND CONTINUE HIS DUTIES AS COMMANDER AND CHIEF OF NORAD.

BUILDING NUMBER TWO, WHICH IS LOCATED ON VANDENBERG STREET, IS NOT FINISHED YET. THE 158,000 SQUARE FOOT, NINETY MILLION DOLLAR FACILITY IS 87 PERCENT COMPLETE.

IT SHOULD BE DONE BY MARCH AND READY FOR NORCOM AND NORAD STAFF OF A FEW HUNDRED SHORTLY AFTER THAT.

IN THE MEANTIME, THE STAFF WILL REMAIN IN OTHER BUILDINGS HERE AT PETERSON AND BEGIN THE TASK AT HAND.

THE OFFICIAL CEREMONY ACTIVATING NORTHERN COMMAND TAKES PLACE NEAR PETERSON TOMORROW MORNING AT 10 O'CLOCK. CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF RICHARD MYER WILL PRESIDE.

A SECOND CEREMONY WILL ALSO BE TOMORROW AND WILL RECOGNIZE THE TRANSITION OF US SPACE COMMAND INTO THE US STRATEGIC COMMAND BASED IN OMAHA, NEBRASKA
