Here are the rules for getting involved in civil wars:

a) Don't.
b) If you ignore a, then pick a side.
c) Make sure your side wins, the faster the better.
Sistani is the last best hope for one Iraq that doesn't become a terrorist haven. I'm not saying he's a good choice, just the only one.

2. Do a FRY division before the civil war, instead of after. Set up Shiite, Sunni, and Kurdish republics then give people time to move if they want to. Soon thereafter, US troops abandon all cities and just start patrolling (and containing) the new borders.

Elections are a pipe dream.
