Update [2005-8-28 18:5:0 by Armando]: Goldberg backpeddling like Willie Mays:

Here's what I do think. I think Sheehan has absolutely no sense of proportion or responsibility when she calls Bush a terrorist and a murderer or when she ascribes comic-book-villain motives to the administration. . . . If I was being too glib by not spelling that out in my post, I apologize. . . . If you leave yourself no room, rhetorically speaking, between yourself and the crazies don't be surprised if the crazies respond to your rhetoric. . . . Anyway, it was not my intent to argue ad Hitlerum about Sheehan. There's enough to criticize her about without going there. If people took me to be saying otherwise, sorry for the miscommunication.

Well Jonah, the irony is delicious. Care to address the evidence of the deliberate and malevolent pattern of behaviour by the Republican Party to attract the ugliest elements of American society to their side? By the way, if your intent was not to argue "ad Hitlerum," what exactly was your intent?

Update [2005-8-28 16:48:40 by Armando]: Not surprisingly, Erick at Red State joins the detestable conduct.

Update [2005-8-28 16:32:8 by Armando]: atrios on The National Review's own disgraceful bigoted past.

Just when you thought they could not go lower, Jonah Goldberg does:

GOOD FOR CINDY! She's rallied the Nazis to her cause (obviously unintentionally, but it's interesting how her message resonates in such quarters nonetheless).

But how about the Republican embrace of bigots?

A close advisor to Bush, Marvin Olasky, wrote a commentary published on Feb. 14, 2000, rapping three Jewish writers and "liberal journalists" who are not yet real Christians. Following are key passages from the piece, headlined "Zeus McCain":

A lot of liberal journalists have holes in their souls. Some of them grew up in nominally Christian homes but never really heard the gospel (Olasky grew up in a Jewish household)...(Frank) Rich's paranoia about Christians is extreme...It's sad that leading journalists are acting as proselytes in the religion of Zeus.

and this?

[F]ormer Sen. Warren Rudman charged while appearing opposite Karl Rove on "Meet the Press" that supporters of Bush phoned voters in South Carolina telling them that primary rival John McCain's campaign co-chairman - namely, Rudman - is Jewish.

Edited to put remainder of post in extended.

Or this?

Republican leaders who consort with the Council of Conservative Citizens, highlight stump speeches at Bob Jones University, reminisce about segregationist campaigns, and sympathize with the bigoted views - and the very real possibility that others in our party affiliate with the Free Congress Foundation and groups with similar offensive ideology - perpetuate broad public opinion that Republicans harbor racist and bigoted ideals. Bill Back's conduct is the most current embarrassment to our party. His decision to distribute bigoted information demonstrates a lack of judgment and political acumen that's not appropriate for someone in a leadership position, especially as vice chairman of the California Republican Party.

Or this?

One of the most disturbing features not listed on [Family Research Council's Tony] Perkins' resume was his involvement in securing the mailing list of Ku Klux Klansman David Duke for a Louisiana Senate campaign he managed in 1996. Four years ago, reporter Max Blumenthal revealed in an April 26, 2005 article for The Nation,"Perkins addressed the Louisiana chapter of the Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC) ... the successor to the White Citizens Councils, which battled integration in the South." Blumenthal wrote that in 1996, while Perkins was running the campaign of longtime conservative Woodie Jenkins, the right-wing Republican candidate for the US Senate in Louisiana, he "paid former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke $82,500 for his mailing list."

Let's be clear here -- Cindy Sheehan detests Neo-Nazis. Not only will she not embrace them, she will run them off. Republicans, on the other hand, seek the bigots out and make them part of their team.

Despicable Republicans. Despicable Goldberg.
