Mr. President, do you agree or disagree with the actions of the Reverend Fred Phelps, who has been protesting at soldiers funerals claiming their deaths are God's revenge for America's embrace of homosexuality?

This is reprehensible:

A Baptist group from Kansas has announced it plans to picket Friday at the funeral of Spc. Adam Harting.
Portage, Ind., police learned about the group's intentions by fax Wednesday.

"We're doing everything here to ensure the safety of everyone involved," Chief Cliff Burch said.

The Westboro Baptist Church, based in Topeka, is not specifically targeting Harting, who died in Iraq last week.

It pickets at military funerals all over the country, saying God is killing U.S. soldiers as punishment to America for allowing homosexuality.

The group also has announced plans to picket at military funerals in Minnesota, Alabama and California this week.

Harting was just 21 when he was killed on July 25 in Samarra from an explosive device.

He was a member of the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 42nd Infantry Division, based in Fort Stewart, Ga.

The group is the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, headed by Phelps, who (and this is not hyperbole) has dedicated his "calling" to inflicting pain and suffering upon the families of our most heroic citizens.

Phelps relishes, yes, relishes, the spilled blood of American soliders: (registration restricted, use dkos password)

In an interview broadcast Thursday afternoon on the "Ralph Bailey Show" on News/Talk 1560 KNZR, Westboro pastor Fred Phelps openly celebrated the deaths of American soldiers serving in Iraq.

"You're a happy man today. Four more Americans died and you're a happy man. You're pleased about that," Bailey said to Phelps.

"Absolutely, and you ought to be," Phelps said. "Look, the veracity of God's involved here. He hasn't done near the damage to this nation that he ought to do and that he will do. This nation's got to repent."

Absolutely disgusting. Spc. Adam Harting was not gay; the group is just using what is supposed to be a dignified and heartfelt rememberance of an individual's life to spread its culture of hate.

The Harting family is not the only family that has to suffer through these disgraceful antics:

Fewer than 10 members will picket, member and attorney Shirley Phelps-Roper said. The group sponsors several anti-gay Web sites. It has plans to picket military funerals in Minnesota, Missouri, California and Alabama this week alone, according to its Web site.

Lucky Phelps. He must LOVE the fact that over two dozen Americans died this week...24 more opportunity-is-knocking chances to terrorize grieving families.

And that's what Phelps and the rest of the wacko fundies do. They terrorize. They may not use suicide bombs, but they use words and actions which cut deep into the hearts of mourning survivors, and which blast away any semblance of dignity and respect at these cermonies.
