Bob Casey has it figured out, and other Democrats running in '06 should take his lead. Today's Philadelphia Inquirer has a piece on Casey's election strategy: go right after Iraq, and associate anybody towing the White House line with the policy failure.

From the story:

U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum's leading Democratic opponent, state Treasurer Robert P. Casey Jr., accused the senator this week of remaining silent while the U.S. death toll in Iraq rises.

This is exactly the correct tact. No longer should we let yes-men like Santorum get away with silence. The war issue needs to be framed to associate silence with troop neglect; up to now, we've allowed the Right to equate acquiescence with "patriotism"...that's bullshit; we should tolerate no more of it...

"The U.S. senator from Pennsylvania, who is third in the leadership, says one of the reasons people should vote for him is because he is in leadership," Casey said in an interview Thursday. "But he is not asking the tough questions."

Exactly, Santorum is the anti-Hagel. Whatever we might think of his party allegiance, Hagel gets it when it comes to confronting policy failure. Santorum doesn't...
