(From the diaries -- Plutonium Page. No wonder Bush nominated this guy.)

Just in case everything you've heard over the past month isn't enough, the AP has uncovered more issues with John Bolton. The article details yet another episode of Bolton's aggresive behavior in the run up to war with Iraq, and another attempt to quash dissenting opinions. In addition, the probe results reinforce the notion that "the intelligence was being fixed around the policy". Emphasis has been added.

AP Probe on Bolton Finds Disturbing Links to Iraq War

John R. Bolton flew to Europe in 2002 to confront the head of a global arms-control agency (Bustani) and demand he resign, then orchestrated the firing of the unwilling diplomat in a move a U.N. tribunal has since judged unlawful, according to officials involved.

More on the flip side...

Diaries :: AlexHamilton's diary :: :: Trackback ::

A former Bolton deputy says the U.S. undersecretary of state felt Jose Bustani "had to go," particularly because the Brazilian was trying to send chemical weapons inspectors to Baghdad. That might have helped defuse the crisis over alleged Iraqi weapons and undermined a U.S. rationale for war.

So not only did the administration know the WMD claims were wrong, they were actively pursuing anyone who might possibly contradict their multi-year propaganda push.

Former Bustani aide Bob Rigg, a New Zealander, sees a clear U.S. motivation: "Why did they not want OPCW involved in Iraq? They felt they couldn't rely on OPCW to come up with the findings the U.S. wanted."

What will it take to get a few Republican Senators to vote against Bolton? He is clearly an individual who has shown an unwillingness to work diplomatically with allies and enemies alike. Let's get this news story out and hope this is the straw that breaks the camel's back.

Woman Accuses Bolton of Harassment

"Iraq, despite UN sanctions, maintains an aggressive program to rebuild the infrastructure for its nuclear, chemical, biological, and missile programs. In each instance, Iraq's procurement agents are actively working to obtain both weapons-specific and dual-use materials and technologies critical to their rebuilding and expansion efforts, using front companies and whatever illicit means are at hand."
